Tending living things reduces cortisol, eases anxiety and depression, and fosters a profound sense of accomplishment, hope, and self-worth.

🤝
Social

Group garden programmes build community, belonging, and communication. Shared stewardship of nature cultivates connection and mutual care.

🌱
Physical

Adaptive gardening tasks improve fine and gross motor skills, strength, coordination, and overall physical function across all ages and abilities.

Spiritual

Witnessing growth cycles in nature fosters awe, meaning, purpose, and connection to something larger — nurturing the inner life and sense of place.

Living Water Gardens — phase by phase

A 10-week online journey through hydroponic growing. Each phase is purposefully designed to deliver specific horticultural therapy benefits across all five wellness domains.

Phase 1 · Weeks 1–2
System Selection & Setup
Choosing your system · understanding nutrients · creating your space

Participants explore different hydroponic systems (Kratky, NFT, DWC) and select the approach best suited to their home environment, budget, and physical capacity. We source materials together and prepare the growing space.

Therapeutic Benefits
  • 🧠 Cognitive: Research and decision-making activates planning and executive function, rebuilding confidence in problem-solving
  • 💚 Emotional: The act of preparing a dedicated space creates anticipation, purpose, and a sense of agency
  • 🌱 Physical: Hands-on assembly of equipment builds fine motor skills and light purposeful movement
Phase 2 · Weeks 3–4
Germination & Seeding
Seed selection · germination science · transplanting seedlings

We introduce participants to seed biology, germination protocols, and the profound act of coaxing life from a dormant seed. Herbs, microgreens, and leafy greens are ideal first crops — fast-growing and immediately rewarding.

Therapeutic Benefits
  • 💚 Emotional: Witnessing germination is a powerful metaphor for new beginnings — especially meaningful in recovery or transition
  • 🧠 Cognitive: Observing daily changes builds attentiveness, patience, and a structured daily routine
  • Spiritual: The mystery of life emerging from seed cultivates awe and a felt connection to natural cycles
Phase 3 · Weeks 5–7
Tending & Growth
Nutrient management · light cycles · troubleshooting · observation journals

The longest and most therapeutically rich phase. Participants develop daily care routines, monitor water and nutrient levels, respond to plant cues, and maintain reflective journals documenting their plants' growth alongside their own inner observations.

Therapeutic Benefits
  • 🧠 Cognitive: Problem-solving nutrient deficiencies and adapting care routines builds flexible thinking and confidence
  • 💚 Emotional: Daily caretaking fosters responsibility, reduces rumination, and anchors participants in the present moment
  • 🤝 Social: Group participants share observations in weekly check-ins, building community and peer support
  • Spiritual: Journaling alongside plant growth deepens self-awareness and sense of personal development
Phase 4 · Weeks 8–9
Harvest
Harvesting techniques · preserving & using your crop · celebrating growth

Participants harvest their first crops and explore simple culinary uses — fresh herbs in cooking, microgreens in salads, lettuce for shared meals. A guided group session celebrates each participant's achievement and the food they've grown from nothing.

Therapeutic Benefits
  • 💚 Emotional: Harvesting is one of the most potent moments in horticultural therapy — tangible proof of sustained effort and capability
  • 🌱 Physical: Fine motor harvesting activities improve dexterity; preparing and eating fresh food supports physical health directly
  • 🤝 Social: Sharing harvests — in person or virtually — strengthens bonds and a sense of generous contribution
  • Spiritual: Closing the growth cycle from seed to table reinforces a felt sense of meaning, completion, and gratitude
Phase 5 · Week 10
Replanting & Continuity
Planning next crops · sustaining the practice · ongoing community access

The final session focuses not on ending, but on continuation. Participants plan their next growing cycle, set personal wellness intentions, and are invited into The Growing Room alumni community for ongoing peer support and monthly virtual growing circles.

Therapeutic Benefits
  • 🧠 Cognitive: Forward planning and goal-setting for the next cycle builds executive function and sustained motivation
  • 💚 Emotional: Transitioning from participant to independent practitioner reinforces lasting self-efficacy and resilience
  • 🤝 Social: Integration into the alumni community ensures long-term social connection and accountability
  • Spiritual: The cyclical nature of growing — always beginning again — mirrors and reinforces the ongoing work of healing
